Six reasons to visit the Fur Rendezvous in Anchorage, Alaska

First and foremost this winter has been hectic. We have traveled 4000 miles from our home in Texas to create a new adventure in Alaska. We have been trying to adjust to the cold and the lack of light. It has been a great experience for us as a family and we are creating memories for our children that we hope they will always cherish. This weekend was by far one of the neatest experience we have had thus-far in Anchorage, and we cant wait to share!

This is a list of the top six reasons to visit the Fur Rendezvous. Information for the Fur Rondy can be found here -} http://www.furrondy.net/ {-. The Fur Rendezvous is a winter festival in Anchorage and is a significant part of the history and tradition of the state. It's the perfect blend of the local native culture and modern experiences. The sled dog races were amazing, the native art work was incredible and the food... OH the food. Below are the reasons why YOU should experience Fur Rondy...And bring the kids! They will love the adventure even more!

1. The snow sculptures! These were so amazing! They started with an 8ft tall block of packed snow and were given the weekend to create an amazing work of art. We ended up visiting this portion of the Fur Rondy later in the day, after the sun had started to set. It was by far one our favorite parts of the day. It was a great mix of art and hard work.

2. Window shopping and art sculptures. Sprinkled all throughout downtown Anchorage are specifically curated storefronts and sculptures that show the heritage and culture of the community. We do not support needless killing of animals for their fur but we do appreciate the artwork and culture that has gone into the creation of such things. For this reason we have to include this on the list. You can't visit Alaska with out witnessing the bond between nature and humans. There is some amazing views and artwork to see.

3. The pony rides. What can we say? Our kids are addicted to horses. This point is clearly obligatory but just as important. There is nothing better than taking a quick breather from walking than to sit back and let your kids enjoy a quick pony ride. The smiles that these kids, and really every kid we have seen, get from riding on a horse is so authentic and classic that we had to include it as a must see.

5. The Carnival. There is something to be said about enjoying a Ferris Wheel in 19 degree weather. You would think that it would be too cold to venture out and ride carnival rides. Let me tell you, the carnival was packed. It was a great experience. People were everywhere, shivering in lines and laughing along the way. There was such an energy of fun and excitement...it was hard not to succumb to the excitement. We participated and it was grand. The rides were fun and the food was great. This was one of the best reasons to visit the Fur Rondy.

6. Downtown Anchorage. One of the most unique experiences we were able to partake in at the Fur Rondy was, simply put, walking. We walked around for about 3 hours. We explored downtown Anchorage. We were in awe of the sights, the buildings, the lines and the people. We had so much fun people watching and exploring that we were more than satisfied to be in the moment.
